Facebook’s primary purpose is to facilitate contact between friends, old and current. We follow each other’s lives a little bit of direction and sometimes we comment on whether anyone had any fun. On Facebook, we can post pictures, send messages, chat, etc.. For many, Facebook has replaced more traditional channels such as email and instant messaging. Facebook is a closed network in the sense that you have to send a friend request before you can read someone else’s Facebook page. This means that Facebook is perceived as more “private” or protected than the more open networks. On Facebook, it is also easy to create different groups, for example, compounds or special interests.

I myself use Tweetdeck to communicate both to Facebook and Twitter. I write a status update is released it immediately on both networks, so people can choose where they want to follow me. Likewise, I see comments and instant messages in Tweetdeck, so really it is as easy as if I just used one of the networks. Besides Tweetdeck there are more similar solutions, such HootSuite and Seesmic.
Outer and inner circle
On Twitter, I am pretty quick to follow new people, I get a tip on a good / interesting twitter, I start to follow. Some I continue then follow. On the other hand, are up only people I know personally. Old friends, current friends, uni and networking contacts. A little bit of an external and an internal circle. Now I am fairly new to Twitter, possibly in my behavior to change over time. We’ll see. Anyway, I think both networks fill a place in my life, I find both work and pleasure in participating.
